South Sudan close to famine, UN says

After more than four years of civil war and failed ceasefires, South Sudan is facing its ‘toughest year on record’ and is close to famine so says members of a working group including South Sudanese and U.N. officials.
Aid groups say almost two-thirds of the population of the the world’s youngest nation will need food aid this year to keep off starvation and malnutrition.
“The situation is extremely fragile, and we are close to seeing another famine. The projections are stark. If we ignore them, we’ll be faced with a growing tragedy,” said Serge Tissot, from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in South Sudan.

 The development is coming weeks after United Nations revealed that armed groups in South Sudan have released more than 300 child soldiers as part of an ongoing project to free at least 400 children.
According to a statement by the UN mission in the country (UNMISS), the 311 children, including 87 girls, will now begin re-integrating into their communities.
Research by the UN mission reveals that the South Sudan Liberation Movement had recruited 563 children, while some 137 were associated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army In-Opposition.

The Plateau Government has confirmed that the state has recorded two positive cases of monkey pox in Shendam Local Government Area of the state. Dr Kunden Deyin, the state Commissioner for Health, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Jos that the first case recorded was imported from Port-Harcort, as the victim came in from Rivers for treatment. According to the commissioner, the infected victim eventually infected his brother and both of them were treated at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital in Jos and discharged. Deyin said that the state’s Epidemiology and Surveilance unit of the ministry are still monitoring the contacts to curtail the spread of the disease. WHO announces cure for excessive bleeding after childbirth

The World Health Organisation in collaboration with Ferring and MSD for Mothers, has announced that  heat-stable carbetocin is as effective as oxytocin in preventing excessive bleeding following vaginal birth. Researched and developed by Ferring, heat-stable carbetocin remains effective at high temperatures, an answer to the limitation of oxytocin which must be stored and transported at 2 – 8°C. According to WHO, every year, 14 million women are affected by postpartum haemorrhage and this is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide, causing approximately 70,000 deaths per year. It remains a major cause of maternal death in Nigeria. New cholera outbreak in Borno State ,WHO supports Nigeria.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are supporting health authorities to respond to a new cholera outbreak in Borno State. Borno State Ministry of Health has detected more than 500 suspected cases, 23 of which are confirmed by laboratory culture testing including 3 deaths. Authorities declared the outbreak on 8 March. The outbreak is concentrated in Kukawa Local Government Area (LGA), a major commercial hub with a population of 150,000 situated near Lake Chad and near borders with Chad and Cameroon. Kukawa LGA is nearly 200 kilometres away from Maiduguri, Borno state capital where a five-month outbreak cholera was contained in late 2017.
